Abstract proposal accepted in ‘Learning, Media & Technology’ journal

November 25th, 2021

Our abstract proposal to the special issue on 'Rethinking the boundaries of learning in a digital age' in the prestigious journal ‘Learning, Media & Technology’ has been accepted. Therefore, we are invited to submit the full paper. This is being led by Kristiina Kumpulainen and Kemal Ahson of the University of Helsinki (with Camacho-Miñano, Shirley and Rich, as coathors). Thanks to UNA Europa funding, Kemal has collaborated with our project conducting a review about our research topic with a very novel approach. Specifically, the paper, entitled ‘A narrative review of ‘space and place’ of digital health technologies in young people’s’, adds to existing research knowledge by examining the role of ‘space and place’ in young people’s engagement and learning with digital health technologies. In particular, it explores the interplay between ‘where’, ‘why’, and ‘with whom’ digital health technologies are used by young people, and how this shapes the meaning(s) and knowledge produced and consumed by them.

The results of the review point to the limitations of the de facto narrative of ‘placelessness’ around which much of the existing research on digital health technologies, young people and learning is situated. The review calls for more research knowledge on the role that space and place play in the production, movement and reception of health-related knowledge in young people’s lives and learning with digital technologies.
